When I Am Scared
When I am scared, I can trust God.
God Loves Me ยท Psalm 56:3; Psalm 27:1
When I am scared, I can trust God.
What makes you feel scared sometimes? The dark? Loud sounds? Being somewhere new? David, who wrote so many of the Psalms, felt scared too. And he showed us what to do with the fear.
David wrote this in a psalm:
'When I am afraid, I will trust in you.'
That's it. Six words. But they are so strong.
Notice: he doesn't say 'I will stop being afraid.'
He doesn't say 'I won't feel scared.'
He says: when I am afraid, which means he expects to feel afraid sometimes, I will trust.
You can be afraid and trust at the same time.
David also wrote: 'The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear?'
Light. When something is dark and scary, what do you do? You turn on a light!
God is like a light in the dark. The scary things are still there. But with the light, you can see. You can breathe. You are safe.
Can you make a little light shape with your hands? Hold it up. That is God's light in the scary moments.
When you feel scared tonight or tomorrow, say these words: 'When I am afraid, I will trust in you.'
Try it now. 'When I am afraid. I will trust in you.' Good.
Prayer
Let's pray. Repeat after me:
Dear God,
When I feel scared,
help me to trust you.
You are my light.
We love you!
Amen.
