Jesus was a child just like me.
When you were a tiny baby, could you walk? No! Could you talk? Nope! You had to learn and grow. Today we hear that Jesus did the very same thing.
After the wise men visit, Mary and Joseph take Jesus home to Nazareth.
It's a small town in the hills. Dusty roads, houses made of stone, goats in the yards, children playing in the streets.
Jesus grows up here.
He is a real child. He eats breakfast. He scrapes His knee. He goes to sleep when it gets dark.
He learns to walk. One wobbly step at a time. Then running!
He learns to talk. He learns the Scriptures, the stories of God, at the synagogue with the other children.
He helps His father Joseph in the carpenter shop. Learning to use tools. Making chairs and doors and tables from wood. The smell of sawdust, the sound of hammering.
Can you pretend to use a hammer? Bang bang bang. Just like Jesus might have done!
The Bible says Jesus grew in wisdom. That means He kept getting smarter and wiser. And He grew in love, with God and with the people around Him.
Jesus knows what it is like to be a child.
He was one.
Prayer
Let's pray. Repeat after me:
Dear God,
Thank you that Jesus grew up.
Thank you that He knows
what it's like to be me.
We love you!
