Being with Jesus is the best thing.
When someone you really love comes to visit, what do you do? Maybe you run to hug them! Today we hear about two sisters who both loved Jesus very much. But they showed it in very different ways.
Jesus comes to visit two sisters. Mary and Martha.
Martha gets very busy. She rushes to the kitchen. She starts cooking. Chopping and stirring and setting the table. She sweeps the floor! She arranges everything just right.
Good! Guests need to be taken care of!
But Mary sits down. Right at Jesus' feet. She looks up at His face. She listens to every word He says. She doesn't want to miss anything.
Martha comes out of the kitchen, hot and frustrated. 'Jesus! Tell Mary to come and help me! I'm doing everything myself!'
Jesus looks at Martha. Gently, kindly.
'Martha,' He says, 'you are worried and upset about so many things. But really, only one thing matters. Mary has chosen the best thing. And it won't be taken from her.'
Can you sit very still, like Mary? Hands in your lap. Quiet. That's it.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop. And be with Jesus.
He loves our help. But He loves us more than our help.
Prayer
Let's pray. Repeat after me:
Dear God,
Help me to sit still
and just be with you.
That is the best thing.
We love you!
